Sarah Burton, the creative director of Alexander McQueen for the past 13 years, is stepping down from the role. Her final collection for the brand will be presented in March 2024.
Burton was appointed creative director of Alexander McQueen in 2010, following the death of the brand's founder, Lee Alexander McQueen. She had previously worked as McQueen's right-hand woman for 14 years and was instrumental in developing the brand's signature aesthetic.
Under Burton's leadership, Alexander McQueen has continued to be one of the most successful and acclaimed fashion houses in the world. She has designed a number of iconic looks, including the wedding dress worn by Kate Middleton in 2011. In a statement, Burton said that she was leaving Alexander McQueen to "pursue new challenges". She said that she was "proud of everything" that she had achieved at the brand and that she was "excited to see what the future holds".
The news of Burton's departure comes at a time of change for Alexander McQueen. The brand was acquired by luxury conglomerate Kering in 2010 and has since undergone a number of changes, including a new CEO and a new creative director for its menswear line. It remains to be seen who will succeed Burton as creative director of Alexander McQueen. However, her departure is a significant loss for the brand, and it will be a challenge to find a successor who can match her creativity and vision.
In a statement, Kering CEO François-Henri Pinault said that Burton was "a true talent" and that she had "made an extraordinary contribution to Alexander McQueen". He said that the company would "begin the process of appointing a new creative director in due course".
Burton's departure is a major change for Alexander McQueen, but it is also an opportunity for the brand to evolve and find a new direction. The company has a strong heritage and a talented team, and it is well-positioned to continue to be successful in the years to come.
